By the Numbers: Women-Led Films Surpass Male-Led Film Earnings

According to the Creative Artist Agency and shift7, women-led films between 2014-2017 earned more than male-led films. Despite these findings, women only made up a quarter of protagonists in 2017’s top films and about a third of major characters. This study also took a look at the Bechdel Test—a test that evaluates whether a work features at least two women who have a conversation about something other a man—and found that the films that passed this test outperformed those films that failed it. Christy Haubegger, a C.A.A. agent involved in the study’s research, declared, “The perception that it’s not good business to have female leads is not true. They’re a marketing asset.”
