Motherhood, traditionally seen as a hindrance to female candidates, has actually proved to be a strength in the 2018 primary season. Candidates like Krish Vignarajah and Kelda Roys, Maryland and Wisconsin gubernatorial hopefuls respectively, have included images of themselves breastfeeding in campaign ads. Candidates have included and featured their children at campaign events and in promotional materials. Moms are capitalizing on their identity explicitly and proudly to connect to voters.
