Girls’ Excel Academy Reopens in D.C.

In Southeast Washington D.C., the charter school called Excel Academy closed last year due to poor performance. Now, the traditional public school system is preparing to reopen it as the only public all-girls school in the District. Excel will continue to serve mostly black girls from low-income families, using a science-focused curriculum. One preschool teacher at Excel helping with recruitment noted, “We have a lot of feminists coming in. They want their daughters to know they are superheroes.”
