"Girls Just Wanna Weekend" Addresses Gender Disparity

Singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile recently released her LP titled By The Way, I Forgive You, which revolves around her “struggle with identity and motherhood.” Alarmed by the gender disparity at music festivals, Carlile decided to respond to the lack of women by creating the “Girls Just Wanna Weekend.” This music festival, featuring an all-female lineup, will run from January 30th to February 3rd in Mexico. Brandi states that the lack of female performers is “not only sexist but it actually might not be smart because a lot of these festivals are missing an opportunity to bring women out,” making it a business decision. Performers joining Brandi Carlile include Maren Morris, Indigo Girls, Margo Price, and Patty Griffin.

Discussion Question:

How can we create inclusive spaces in entertainment while at the same time not excluding others?

Action Item:

Think about who you would like to see perform at a music festival. How many of those artists are women? Try taking some time to find (and follow) female performers.
