All-Girls Trade Classes- Empowering or Illegal?

At Myers Park High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, auto mechanics teacher Kristina Carlevatti started a girls-only “Intro to Auto” class after noticing that few girls showed up in the co-ed trade classes offered. One possible conflict, though, is that these single-gender courses could violate the Title IX law prohibiting separation of genders in vocational training. Advocates continue to push for these classes, though, on behalf of current students who note the female empowerment that these learning environments promote.
