The Women’s Media Center and BBC America just conducted a study in an “attempt to quantify” the importance of female representation in sci-fi and superhero genres. The study wished to understand how young girls are influenced by the presence of female role models in this genre. Wonder Woman–the first female superhero to receive her own movie– was cited as the #1 favorite superhero for girls ages 5-19. Recently, there have been many “firsts” for female representation in these genres. The solution to the problem of representation? BBC America President Sarah Barnett writes, “If you can’t see her, you can’t be her. It’s time to expand what gets seen, and we hope this report will contribute to sparking change in the stories we see on screen. With greater representation of female heroes in the sci-fi and superhero genre, we can help superpower the next generation of women.”
