Silence

I’m prescribed a dose of silence;

my doctor says I’m overwhelmed by constant sound.

“You can’t save the world,” he says,

yet he dedicates his life to defying humanity’s fate.

Just outside the corner of my eye,

I spot the Life-saver’s degree,

far enough that I cannot grasp it with my outstretched hands

that so often fall short,

but close enough to ask myself:

“If you can, why can’t I?”

My silence is authorized,

but has the doctor forgotten?

Every medication comes with side effects—

they push a milligram of silence,

I push back a million words.

I’m prescribed a dose of silence;

my doctor says I’m overwhelmed by constant sound.

My silence is prohibited;

the only option is to be loud.
