Before VSCO became a place to post pictures of scrunchies, water bottles covered with stickers, and oversized t-shirts, it was- believe it or not- a platform for photography. It serves as a platform created to edit photos and videos, self expression, and a creative community hub. VSCO has long served as my main source of inspiration and creative mind dump as it has some hidden features that bring new projects and ideas to the table. Whether you’re exploring new layouts, editing photos, or simply scrolling through, let’s take a look at how to spice up or pursue new photography adventures with the help of VSCO.
TBH, my obsession with VSCO began as an app that I just randomly found on the App Store in 2015. Now it’s my main source of publication for photography since it’s easy to use and allows for diversity in stylistic approaches. There’s cultivation! There’s creation! There’s editing! VSCO is so much more than a place to edit photos- it’s a place to get inspiration.
Posting pictures on VSCO allows you to curate all your content in one place; think of it as a little scrapbook, if you will. By doing so, it helps to establish a sense of personal style and establishes interest from a creative community, who responds to and sees your work
One of my personal favorite VSCO features is the ability to create journals. This feature allows you to compile your pictures into an album and you can even add text. I like to use journals to curate long term and short term projects of all sorts. Whether it be of your favorite works, memories, or personal collection, the journal serves as a recollection.
Favoriting & Republishing
By favoriting pictures that inspire you or ones that you’d like to recreate, you can create a private collection of your inspiration. The feature on the app called “Just For You” even gives you ideas based on your personal work and past findings. On the other hand, you have the republishing feature that displays your personal favorites and allows you to showcase other photographer's creations that speak to you.
Each week, VSCO introduces a new challenge to give you different projects to pursue or a chance to rediscover some old photos. It also allows for VSCO itself to curate, discover, and publish content.
With a multifaceted functionality, VSCO is your one-stop shop for photography and all that it encompasses. From short term to long term projects, testing out different mediums, and finding your muse, the app serves as a platform for your voice and a curation of your creative progress.
