Thomas Page McBee’s new memoir Amateur explores masculinity through his experiences and interactions with other men who box. McBee discusses how boys are socialized early on to allow certain things into the frame of masculinity, while others must be strictly excluded. When gender roles remove the possibility for strong relationships and emotional vulnerability, that’s when you know you have a problem. The form of the trans memoir offers a unique perspective on norms that cisgender people take for granted and leave unchallenged.
